Hiring Outside the Box: Clatsop Care Health District Starts Nursing & Caregiver Float Pool
Community Healthcare Organization Creating a Solution for their gap Shortage in Clatsop County
ASTORIA, OR – November 1, 2022 – In September, Clatsop Care Health District (CCHD) began recruiting caregivers and CNAs for a float pool of employees that would serve all three of their facilities: Clatsop Care Health & Rehabilitation, Clatsop Care Retirement Village, and Clatsop Care Memory Community in Warrenton. Employees of the float pool will be trained to meet the needs of each distinct patient population. Caregivers will be offered the opportunity to train as Certified Nursing Assistants to care for the residents at Clatsop Care Health & Rehabilitation. As a skilled nursing facility, state and federal guidelines require CNA certification at this facility.
In the past two years, long-term care facilities and community-based care facilities have felt the burden of a changing labor market, including fewer applicants and 20 – 40% price increases from nursing staffing agencies. Faced with the decision to either contract with costly staffing agencies or lower the number of residents at each facility, the leadership team at CCHD looked toward float pool models like those in larger hospital systems to find a better solution.
Employees of the CCHD float pool are offered flexibility in scheduling, wage differentials for their knowledge of all facilities, and the opportunity for growth through the CNA program. By enabling employees to work at multiple facilities, the Health District can meet fluctuating staffing needs, eliminate the use of temporary staffing agencies, and grow to meet needs of more residents throughout Clatsop County.
